What is it?

The tea ceremony or Jing Cha in Chinese, literally means, ‘to respectfully offer tea is one of the most significant events at a Chinese wedding. It incorporates a very formal introduction of the couple, and expresses respect to their families.

How is it done?

During the ceremony, the couple kneel in front of their respective parents and serve them tea and thank them together to express their gratitude and respect. Traditionally, the couple serves the family of their partner to symbolize the joining together of the two families.

Next, each of the grandparents are served. Then, the oldest uncles, aunts, and siblings are served. After each elder takes a sip, they hand the couple a lai see (a lucky red envelope), which usually contains money or jewelry.
